The Movement for Workers Without a Union

Working America is the community affiliate of the AFL-CIO — the largest federation of labor unions in the United States. It exists so that working people who don’t have a union on the job still have a way to fight together for good wages, fair treatment, and the power to shape their workplaces and communities.

Founded on October 10, 2003 in Cleveland, Ohio, Working America has grown into a 5-million-member organization with members in every U.S. state — the largest grassroots affiliate of the AFL-CIO and one of the most distinctive working-class organizing operations in the country.

It works year-round — not just at election time — building relationships with working families one door at a time, then connecting them to issue campaigns, voter engagement, legislative action, and direct workplace help through programs like Fix My Job.

The Working America Story
  1. October 10, 2003
    Founded in Cleveland, Ohio
    Working America launched in Cleveland as the AFL-CIO's community affiliate for working people without a union on the job. Founding leadership: Karen Nussbaum (longtime working women's organizer and founder of 9to5).
  2. 2003 → Today
    From Door-Knocking Pilot to 5 Million Members
    What began as a small door-to-door pilot has grown into the largest grassroots organization of working-class voters in the country — built one conversation at a time.

    Not a Campaign Cycle — a Movement
    Working America's canvass operates 12 months a year — not just before an election. That continuity is the secret sauce: deep, durable relationships with working families.

    By interviewing thousands of voters across battleground House and Senate districts, Working America surfaces what working people actually think — and shares it with the wider movement and the press.
