Research the company — know what they do, how many employees, union or non-union

Bring 2-3 copies of your resume (even if you submitted one online)

Dress one level above the job — clean, professional, no wrinkles

Arrive 10-15 minutes early — never late

Bring a notepad and pen — shows you're serious

Turn off your phone completely

"Tell me about yourself" → Keep it to 60 seconds: who you are, what skills you bring, why you want this job

"Why do you want this job?" → Connect your skills to their needs. Mention the training/certifications you have

"What's your greatest strength?" → Pick one that matches the job: reliability, teamwork, safety-minded, quick learner

"What's your greatest weakness?" → Pick something real but show how you're working on it: "I used to struggle with time management but I now use a calendar for everything"

"Where do you see yourself in 5 years?" → Show ambition: "I want to master this trade, earn my journeyworker card, and eventually mentor others"

"Do you have any questions?" → ALWAYS say yes: "What does a typical day look like?" or "What's the path for advancement?"

Many union jobs hire through the apprenticeship application process, not traditional interviews

You may interview with a Joint Apprenticeship Committee (union + employer)

Emphasize: reliability, willingness to learn, physical fitness, safety awareness, teamwork

Mention any pre-apprenticeship training, OSHA certifications, or trade math skills

Ask about the apprenticeship timeline, wage progression, and benefits

Being a military veteran or having trade school experience is often a plus — mention it

Send a thank-you text or email within 24 hours

Reference something specific from the conversation

If you don't hear back in a week, follow up once (phone or email)

If you don't get the job, ask for feedback — it helps next time

Keep applying to multiple places — don't wait on one
