Advanced Steward

Representing Members in Meetings

As a steward, you will represent members in various meetings with management. Your preparation and conduct in these meetings can make or break a case.

Before the Meeting:

• Review the contract provisions involved

• Prepare your arguments and evidence

• Meet with the member beforehand to discuss strategy

• Anticipate management's arguments

• Bring all relevant documents

During the Meeting:

• Introduce yourself and your role

• Take detailed notes

• Stay calm and professional — never lose your temper

• Ask clarifying questions

• Request caucuses (breaks) when needed

• Don't agree to anything without consulting the member

• Don't admit fault on behalf of the member

Power Moves:

• Silence is powerful — don't fill every pause

• Ask management to cite the specific contract provision they're relying on

• If management presents new information, request a caucus to discuss with the member

• Always summarize what was agreed upon at the end of the meeting

After the Meeting:

• Document everything immediately

• Follow up on any agreed-upon actions

• Communicate the outcome to the member

• Determine next steps if the grievance wasn't resolved
