Leadership Spotlight — The President

Jacob Morrison, President, North Alabama Area Labor Council

Jacob Morrison

President · AFGE Local 1858

When the North Alabama Area Labor Council was rechartered in April 2020, Jacob Morrison helped bring it back to life — and he hasn't slowed down since. A proud member of AFGE Local 1858 out of Redstone Arsenal, Jacob has turned the council into one of the most visible, hardest-charging labor bodies in the South.

His message is simple and relentless: working people need a seat at the table — in Huntsville's boom, in every county commission, and in every conversation about North Alabama's future. Under his leadership the council has grown to roughly a dozen affiliated locals representing thousands of workers — rocket scientists to stagehands, letter carriers to line workers — won municipal endorsement fights, published the North Alabama Workers' Agenda, and put paid organizers on the ground.

Jacob also co-hosts The Valley Labor Report — Alabama's weekly union talk radio show — live every Saturday 9:30–11:00 AM on 92.5 FM WVNN and on YouTube. It's labor's loudest megaphone in the Valley, and it's run from this council's own backyard.

What This Council Delivers

North Alabama Workers' Agenda

A high-road vision demanding the Valley's growth benefit working people — not just corporations and developers.

Endorsements chosen by delegates

Municipal endorsement slates voted on democratically by local union delegates — labor's voice in Huntsville elections and beyond.

Shoals Area Labor Day Festival

Part of the tradition around the oldest Labor Day event in Alabama — parade, speeches, and family solidarity.

Boots-on-the-ground organizing

The council hires organizers and runs community campaigns to grow union density across all seven counties.

To every local union in the seven counties

Affiliate with the council — no matter how your members vote.

Your members are Republicans, Democrats, independents, and everything in between — and every one of them punches the same clock. The labor council isn't a political party. It's the one room in North Alabama where labor speaks with one voice on the things every member needs: a fair contract, a safe job, and a future for their kids. Here's what affiliation buys your local:

It's about power, not party

The council fights the paycheck issues every member shares — wages, safety, prevailing wage, apprenticeships, retirement security. Those don't have a party. A bigger council means a bigger stick at every bargaining table in the Valley.

Your local keeps 100% autonomy

Affiliation doesn't tell your members how to vote — nobody can. Council endorsements are decided democratically by delegates from affiliated locals. If you're not at the table, decisions get made without your voice. Affiliate and your delegates cast those votes.

Solidarity when it counts

When a local hits a strike, a lockout, or a fight with a hostile employer, the council turns out bodies, food, funds, and press across seven counties. That backup is worth more than any dues dollar — and one day it'll be your picket line.

A seat at every table

City halls, county commissions, and school boards across North Alabama listen differently when a united council of thousands of workers speaks. Project labor agreements, responsible-bidder rules, and the North Alabama Workers' Agenda get won together — not alone.

Your own media megaphone

How many councils have a weekly radio show? The Valley Labor Report puts North Alabama's union fights on 92.5 FM WVNN and YouTube every Saturday. Affiliates get their victories, drives, and grievances heard across the Valley.

Grow or shrink — together

The council is hiring organizers and running community campaigns. Every new union member in the Valley raises the floor for yours. Density is bargaining power — and no local builds it alone.
